Chamber Made creates genre-defying works at the intersections of sound, music, & contemporary performance.

About Us

Based on Wurundjeri Country in Naarm/Melbourne, Chamber Made creates original performance works that defy categorisation. Our commitment to collaboration, appetite for innovation, and fascination with intersecting artforms drives everything we do.

Interrogating the intersections of music, sound and contemporary performance, our works speak directly to a 21st century Australia enriched by the meeting of cultures. Through artworks, mentorships, internships, residencies and advocacy, we create pathways for a diverse cohort of artists and arts workers.

Since 1988, we've produced over 50 original works and presented over 100 performance seasons nationally and internationally.

History

Chamber Made was established in 1988 by founding Artistic Director Douglas Horton and General Manager Stephen Armstrong. Horton led the company until 2009, followed by David Young (2009–2013), then Creative Director Tim Stitz (2013–2016) working with four Artistic Associates—Erkki Veltheim, Tamara Saulwick, Christie Stott and Sarah Kriegler.

In 2017, Tamara Saulwick was appointed Artistic Director working alongside Tim Stitz until his departure in 2018 when Executive Producer Kylie McRae joined to help lead the company.

Chamber Made's focus has evolved from its early years of creating original, experimental chamber opera to a broader practice of re-imagining how music, sound and performance converge.

With collaboration and cross artform practice at its heart, the company creates engaging, complex works where presentation mode and format emerge from deep consideration of the relationship between form and content, expression and reception.
