Photo: Pia JohnsonThe inaugural Hi-Viz Practice Exchange 2018 was held at The Substation for women and non-binary artists working across performance, sound and music.
This initiative grew out of an awareness that while there are many artists working across artforms, there were few opportunities outside of the framework of producing work, to gather and interrogate this area of practice. Hi-Viz Practice Exchange aimed to begin conversations to unpack these differences in the hope of developing a richer understanding of the possibilities of cross-artform practice. It was a day for practitioners from the often quite discrete scenes of contemporary performance/theatre, sound art, and new/art music to meet one another.
The day consisted of the following:
Gail Priest
Panel Discussion One: Collaboration
With Tamara Saulwick, Adena Jacobs, Gian Slater, and Ria Soemardjio. Facilitated by Genevieve Lacy
Panel Discussion Two: Organising Principles
With Kate Sulan, Emma Valente, Madeleine Flynn, and Liza Lim. Facilitated by Emilie Collyer
Round table activities and practice conversations
Our two writers-in-residence were:
Alison Croggon: Hi-Viz Practice Exchange Reflection
Cynthia Troup: ‘All visible’: Notes from the first Hi-Viz Practice Exchange
'It gave me a sense of community – a poor word for the level of encouragement, courage and hope I got from the day. The other participants felt like a team of artists cheering me on, wanting to collaborate and support me.' PARTICIPANT
